My son figured out what PM meant, and I found two messages - one new and one almost a year old. I always wondered what that top banner meant about 1 message waiting. I may be old, but I am learning. However, not very fast.

That's a great bit of information Rocketeer.
Thanks for posting the correct rear measuring.
I don't imajine anyone could have fgured that out very easily.
It makes perfect sense to me now that you mention it.

I have noticed that some rear propeller shafts have a longer flange yoke than do some others.
The slightly longer rear flange yokes are mated to the propeller shafts having slightly shorter splined yokes.

This should help explain why so many rear propeller shaft lengths were used.
I suspect that various rear flange yokes were used to optimize the propeller shaft OA length.
I believe that the rear flange yokes were supplied in specific lengths to provide the optimum effect upon the rear propeller shaft angle.

From my observations the shortest feasablable rear flange yoke was always used.
This allows the rear propeller to be at its longest possible length while not binding at the universal.
In other words if the rear flange yoke were extendeed back too far, the propeller shaft is shortened and the angle is more acute.
If the rear flange yoke is too short then the u-joint binds when the rear axle goes into full droop.
A longer rear flange yoke is always used for a shorter OA propeller length.
Clear as mud ?

Suspicions confirmed. Someone sent me a copy of the blueprints (Thanks Wes) for the M38 driveshafts. While there are some technical differences the M38 is essentially a CJ3A and the driveshafts are interchangeable. What the blueprints show is that the front driveshaft is, in fact, measured from ctr of u-joint to ctr of u-joint and is accurate at 22 31/32".

However, the blueprint for the rear driveshaft does show a different method of measuring. On the blueprint the rear driveshaft is measured from the ctr of the rear u-joint to the front edge of the front flange, not the ctr of the u-joint. Nice of Willys to leave that little bit of info out of the manuals.

So now you know the correct way to measure your driveshafts when trying to determine what is correct for your vehicle.

FRONT - ctr of u-joint to ctr of u-joint
REAR - ctr of rear u-joint to front edge of forward flange

Here's a corrected diagram. It's a jpg image and can be saved for reference.

Got a new radiator for Christmas and the Willys is alive once again! Thanks for the info everybody (especially the PM's, rocketeer). There was the predicted clearance isssue at the bottom, fixed with a couple extra washers as spacers for the moment.

Don't understand the message "PM sent".

It means "Private Message". If you look at the top banner off to the right you will see a message like the one below. Click on it to get to them.

"Hey, rocketeer, you have 3 messages, 0 are new.
